By 2028, 520 MW of new capacity will be built in Mátra.

The foundation stone of the Mátra Power Plant's closed-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) unit was laid, MVM announced on Tuesday.

The press release quotes the Energy Minister as stressing on the occasion of the event that well-regulated gas-fired power plants are also needed to balance weather-dependent generation. The state-of-the-art Visonta plant will play an indispensable role in domestic security of supply and its specific carbon dioxide emissions are only a quarter of those of lignite-based power generation, Csaba Lantos said.

The Minister recalled that a total of three blocks were being prepared for construction in Eastern Hungary, Visonta and Tiszaújváros.

Built by a Hungarian-Egyptian consortium

Based on the international public procurement procedure, the winning consortium for the construction and long-term maintenance of the gas turbine is Status KPRIA Zrt., also wholly Hungarian-owned WEST HUNGÁRIA BAU Kft., and one of Egypt's leading industrial and energy companies, Elsewedy Electric, which is part of Elsewedy Power System Projects companies, which are part of .

Representing the consortium of contractors, Tamás Nemeth, CEO of Status KPRIA, said.

<A gas turbine, a steam turbine and a heat recovery boiler, which can also burn green hydrogen, are combined in a single system. The new power plant will produce electricity with significantly lower carbon emissions, better efficiency and more flexibility than conventional coal-fired units, they said.

The contract with the contractors was signed in February, and the installation permit was obtained in May, according to the announcement. The new power plant block will have a lifetime of at least 25 years.
