Borsodchem to set up a new plant in Kazincbarcika
BorsodChem is setting up a pioneering, safe and environmentally sound LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cathode base material production plant at its site in Kazincbarcik, Hungary, which is also a pioneer in Europe, according to a company statement.
According to the chemical giant, part of China's Wanhua Chemical Group
The investment will give a new function to the company's former petrochemical warehouse, the new plant will have a capacity of 30 thousand tonnes per year.
The company recently submitted a single environmental permit application to the Government Office for the plant, which will create more than 50 new jobs. The trial operation is scheduled to start at the end of 2026.
Emphasis on safety
The BorsodChem will create a world-leading LFP cathode base material production plant, a pioneer in Europe, with a similar technology only in Germany
- they wrote. The next generation LFP technology is increasingly being used in energy storage systems, consumer electronics and vehicles from many of the world's leading car manufacturers.
LFP is a lithium-ion battery subtype that uses iron phosphate as the cathode material.
Borsodchem's statement said that the production process of the material is sustainable, closed and safe. The raw material used is a stable compound, mainly composed of iron and lithium, non-explosive, non-flammable and non-toxic to humans. The entire processing is fully enclosed and automated. All production equipment complies with strict EU standards," the chemical company stressed.
20 trucks a day, 30 thousand tonnes a year
CEO László Kruppa said in the statement that the investment will not have a significant impact on the daily lives of people living in the area, the traffic of the plant will increase by 20 trucks per day at most, and the new activity will be planned with special attention to the strict noise limits. As the technology does not require water, it only discharges a negligible amount of effluent due to minimal laboratory requirements. Thus, there will be no significant increase in water consumption at BorsodChem and no impact on soil or groundwater from the LFP operation. There will also be no significant change in electricity consumption.
