The widened section of the main road 33 between the M35 motorway and the industrial zone of the BMW factory near Debrecen has been opened. The 2.2-kilometre section was four-lane widened by Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium, with STRABAG Építőipari Zrt. carrying out the work.

The project also included the realignment of a single-track direct branch over the MÁV 108 railway line. In addition, interchange branches, new signalized intersections, parallel pedestrian/bicycle paths, and agricultural dirt roads were created.

The section of the main road 33 from the city to Hortobágy (the section in red on the map is the section built by Strabag) was already carrying significant traffic before the BMW investment, so its extension was even more justified by the increasing congestion.

A related development is the continued expansion of Main Road 33: the four-lane section between the industrial development area in question and the connecting road marked 3316 is being carried out by KE-VÍZ 21 Zrt. will widen the road to four lanes over a 2,010-metre section (marked in green on the map).

New bridge built with glass foam and innovative elements

NIF Zrt., the previous investor in the project, which started last February, told us that the railway bridge was built using innovative technology, as the backfill was made of around 1,260 cubic metres of glass foam. The road construction involved the construction of around 240 000 m3 of earthwork, 11 000 m3 of hydraulic binder and 12 000 m3 of bituminous binder.

Loránd Bói drew attention to the fact that the newly handed over investment is exemplary in Hungary: an integrated solution has been created to serve the production site and improve transport for the people living in the area, which is rare in Hungary. László Papp added that Debrecen has seen historic economic and transport development in recent years, but further, even larger-scale works are in the pipeline.

Lajos Kósa described Debrecen as one of the country's industrial centres, which "will be the city with the largest local business tax revenue after the capital". István Joó said that since last year, their initiative had led to some 125 government decisions to develop industrial parks, worth more than HUF 800 billion.
