Important bridge renewed in the Danube bend

Published

During the construction, KM Építő had to ensure traffic flow on the passage serving the mine in Dunabogdány.

KM Építő Kft. has renovated an important bridge in the Danube Bend area, carrying heavy traffic. The Dunabogdany viaduct, which was opened on 15 November last year on schedule, connects the local mine with the Danube-front loading area, spanning over the main road 11.

It used to be a significant bridge, but it is in a badly deteriorated state

Last autumn, our newspaper reported on the project, which was still underway at the time, linked to the long-established andesite mine in Dunabogdány. The quarry's former importance was due to the fact that it was the predominant source of stone for the roads of Budapest, which was becoming a cosmopolitan city. However, the quarry is still in operation today, owned by Basalt-Középkő Kft.: nowadays, with modern machinery and high quality products, it is one of the most important andesite deposits in our country.

The mine is connected to the Danube embankment by Bánya Street, which crosses the main road 11 along the river on an overpass. KM Építő Kft. was tasked with preventing further deterioration of the superstructure on the bridge, which has deteriorated significantly in recent years, and to provide a safe 2×1 lane width for two-way traffic.

It was only closed to traffic for a very short time

As previously indicated, during the renovation of the 54-metre-long bridge, the entire bridge structure was milled and the kerbs were demolished. At the same time, the bridge was given new insulation, the deck was levelled, a new restraint system and new waterproof coatings were installed, and the bridge structure was drained. We reported on the other work carried out in in this article.

A particular difficulty was that the mine had to be serviced at all times during the construction, and the bridge could only be closed to traffic for very short periods.

Deadline met despite rainy weather

The work carried out after our last article involved treating the entire underside of the superstructure with a new surface coating, following high-pressure cleaning. In addition, the drainage of the poured asphalt, the repair of the flexible joint pouring, stairs, surrantos and the stone paving of the copper cone, as well as the paving of the bench were completed. In addition to this, geodetic survey points were installed on the bridge and a geodetic elevation base point was installed.

The report submitted to our newspaper concluded by stressing that due to the rainy weather, the project was finally completed by the deadline set in the contract, i.e. 15 November 2023: on that day, the technical handover was successfully completed.
