Work on the Mohács Danube bridge project to start in mid-October

As part of the protocol process, on 26 September the worksite for the construction of the Danube bridge and connecting road network in Mohács was handed over to the contractor, magyarepitok.hu reported.

The Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium project involves the construction of a 756-metre-long bridge by Duna Aszfalt Zrt. between Mohács and Újmohács, Hungary's southernmost bridge over the Danube. The development also includes the construction of 28.8 kilometres of main road and 13 reinforced concrete bridges, a cycle underpass and a framework structure between Highway 51 and the M6 motorway: on the lowland side, a dual carriageway of almost 20 km will be built, while on the Transdanubian side, a four-lane road of 8.5 km will be constructed.

According to our newspaper, the contract between the ministry and the contractor entered into force on 30 August, as a precursor to the handover of the worksite. Thursday's event was part of a protocol process, but it does not yet equate to the authorisation to start work.

Permits are expected to be issued in mid-October for the work areas already available. Archaeological work, de-armouring and site preparation will start later this year. Large-scale construction is expected to start early next year.

As previously reported, the project prepared in the general design of SPECIÁLTERV Kft. - the major subcontractors involved in the execution were FŐMTERV Zrt. (road bridge) and UVATERV Zrt. (independent structural engineering) - will create three crossings over the Danube, with the same structural system but different spans. The steel arch bridges will be constructed with steel suspension girders in a grid layout.
