Road building
The capital’s most significant transport development has entered its final stages
One of the capital’s most significant investment projects is now in its final stages: by the end of the summer, work on the second renovated northern bridge will also be completed as part of the Flórián Square flyover project. According to the latest announcement from BKK, the technical readiness of the development KM Építő Kft. project, which is being carried out under a general contractor, is expected to exceed 90 per cent technical completion by the end of July. The reconstruction of the Flórián Square flyovers – built over 40 years ago and linking Szentendrei Road and the Árpád Bridge – is being carried out in accordance with Főmtrev’s Zrt. plans.
The announcement points out that the project, which began last spring, is still subject to traffic restrictions, but those travelling through the area will not have to put up with them for much longer.
According to the schedule, the main bridge renovation works could be completed by the end of the summer, and the renovated northern flyover is expected to open to traffic in the autumn. After that, only minor finishing works, repairs and the restoration of the Flórián Square surface junction will remain.
Not even the extreme heat brought the construction work to a halt
The BKK also touched upon the technical progress of the project: according to the report, several key structural work phases on the northern bridge have been completed, whilst preparations are already underway for the construction of the new carriageway. Even the extreme heat at the start of July did not halt construction work, with specialists continuing to work in compliance with health and safety and technical regulations.
Due to the high temperatures, work that does not generate noise is still typically carried out by specialists during the night, so as to minimise disruption to local residents.
The unscheduled maintenance has now been completed
The statement also set out the results from the recent period in a separate list:
- The new reinforced concrete structure at the bridge abutment on the Árpád Bridge side has been completed, enabling the installation of the expansion joint and the carrying out of insulation work;
- At the same time, the reconstruction of the bridgehead on the Szentendrei út side is underway, which is the final major structural task of the refurbishment;
- The unplanned restoration of the bridge deck’s geometry has been completed: following the laying and curing of the additional layer of concrete, work will continue on the waterproofing of the entire surface of the bridge deck, after which the protective asphalt layer will be laid;
- Significant progress has also been made in the installation of the bridge’s safety and operational components: the anti-salt coatings on the bridge parapets have been completed, and work is continuing on the installation of the new steel guardrails, as well as the fall protection barriers and steel cables.
The new asphalt binder and wearing courses will be completed by mid-August
Work on the drainage system will continue over the coming weeks: the surface drains and drip channels, which are designed to ensure the safe drainage of rainwater, will be completed. In the first few days of August, the existing asphalt surface of the ramps connecting to the flyover will be milled,
According to the plans, the new asphalt binder and wearing courses on the bridge and the connecting road sections will be completed by mid-August.
