Upgraded trains between Oradea and the Hungarian border
Traffic has resumed on the upgraded railway line between Oradea and the Hungarian border, the Romanian state railway company (CFR) said. The first freight train on the upgraded section passed through from Episcopia Bihor to Biharkeresztes in the evening hours of 31 July.
Railway to Cluj Napoca to be renovated and electrified
The 7-kilometre section of track has been upgraded as part of an investment to modernise and electrify the railway line between Cluj-Napoca and the Hungarian border. The project is worth RON 9.369 billion (HUF 737.996 billion) and the Bucharest government intends to finance it partly from EU funds.
As a result of the works, passenger trains will run at 160 km/h
The 166.7 km railway line was suspended in December 2023. The project was due to be completed by August 2026, but the CFR has admitted that the works are behind schedule, with the opening expected in 2027. The upgraded line will allow passenger trains to run at a maximum speed of 160 kilometres per hour and freight trains at 120 kilometres per hour. This means that it will take 2 hours and 14 minutes to get from the Hungarian border to Cluj-Napoca by train.
The speed limit between Oradea and the Hungarian-Romanian border is currently 50 kilometres per hour.
