The 849-bed healthcare centre near Cluj-Napoca will be built in two phases and will include 22 operating theatres, outpatient clinics and a helipad. The hospital is expected to treat around 360,000 people a year.

The contract for the second construction phase of the regional emergency hospital in Cluj-Napoca was signed in Bucharest, meaning that another major healthcare investment project in Romania is set to enter the implementation phase. The Romanian healthcare system has embarked on strategic hospital development projects in Craiova and Iași. The facility being built as part of the Cluj-Napoca project could become one of the country’s most modern healthcare facilities.

Turkish and Romanian companies are building the main hospital building

The public procurement procedures for the construction of the hospital in Cluj-Napoca have been delayed by a number of disputes. The project has been divided into two major phases. The first phase, which involves the installation of utilities and comprehensive civil engineering works, has been awarded to UBITECH CONSTRUCŢII SRL.
The contract for the second phase of construction was signed by Iuliana Feclistov, head of the Romanian agency responsible for healthcare infrastructure development, and Mehmet Burak Vardan, representative of the Turkish-German joint venture acting as contractor. Alongside the Turkish firm CCN, Romanian construction companies are involved in the construction of the main building, the technical and service infrastructure, the helipad and the photovoltaic park.

It could be one of the country's most modern hospitals

The hospital’s seven-storey building will house adult, paediatric and neonatal wards, with a total of 849 beds. There will be more than 100 beds in the intensive care unit. The facility will also be able to treat patients with severe burns. In addition, outpatient clinics, 22 operating theatres and state-of-the-art medical technology will serve patients. According to estimates, the new facility will be able to treat 360,000 patients annually.
The total investment amounts to 3.4 billion lei. The construction and fitting-out of the hospital may take three and a half years. Once the work is completed, the facility, located in the heart of Transylvania, will be able to begin operating as one of Romania’s most modern regional emergency hospitals.

Metro construction is underway near the new healthcare facility

Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan emphasised that, as a resident of the north-western region, he is well aware that the best healthcare services are provided by doctors in Cluj-Napoca.
Attila Cseke, the acting Romanian government’s appointed Minister of Health, emphasised that the hospital being built in the heart of Transylvania is the most important infrastructure initiative of recent decades. Emil Boc, Mayor of Cluj-Napoca, recalled that the site in Floresti, near Cluj-Napoca, which was previously used by the army, was acquired for this purpose back in 2011. The infrastructure works are expected to be completed by the summer. He added that construction of the light rail system has also begun in the vicinity of the future hospital to ensure that public transport is available.
