Track maintenance work is being carried out on the Budapest–Veresegyház–Vác railway line whilst the line is closed; as a result, replacement buses will run between Budapest and Veresegyház instead of trains from Friday night until 19 July, the MÁV group has announced.
The works will also affect Nyugati railway station
There will be changes to the timetable for the S71 and G71 services: trains will only run between Vác and Veresegyház, whilst replacement buses will carry passengers between the capital and Veresegyház. Further changes are also to be expected on some nights, as maintenance work is being carried out on the overhead line network at Budapest’s Nyugati railway station.
Rails are being replaced over a distance of around 700 metres
The MÁV maintenance programme, worth approximately 150 million forints and funded from the company’s own resources, covers several sections of track and railway infrastructure. Rails are being replaced over a distance of approximately 700 metres between Rákospalota-Újpest and Fót, and four level crossings are also being rebuilt: one in the 15th district, two in the Fót area, and one in Veresegyház.
As part of the works, engineers are replacing not only points but also sleepers at Fót station. Furthermore, between Rákospalota-Újpest and Veresegyház, vegetation growing close to the tracks is being cleared, and trees posing a risk to rail safety are being felled. Maintenance of the overhead line network is also part of the programme, which aims to reduce the number of technical faults and the risk of them occurring.
The slow-moving traffic comes to an end at over 1,300 metres
One of the most significant outcomes of the maintenance work is that the 30–40 kilometre per hour speed limit will be lifted on stretches of track at altitudes of over 1,300 metres. Once the work is complete, the maximum permitted speed on these sections will once again be 60 kilometres per hour.
