Work begins on stabilising the embankment in Balatonkenese
The local council of Balatonkenese has commissioned the stabilisation of the town’s embankment under a works contract. The successful tenderer is Danmin Invest Kft., with the net value of the project exceeding 81 million forints – reports kozbeszerzes.hu.
The works are taking place within the administrative area of Balatonkenese, on the properties with cadastral numbers 397/1 and 397/2.
The aim of the project is to improve the stability of the embankment and ensure the safe use of the area.
Construction of a retaining wall and sloping
The project comprises a number of interlinked measures aimed at stabilising the embankment.
On the upper, block-like section of the embankment, rock cutting using alpine techniques will be carried out at a height of approximately 22–24 metres, with an average thickness of 0.8 metres.
The aim of the work is to remove hazardous sections whilst ensuring that the landscape remains unchanged.
Establishment of a multi-layered security system
As part of the project, three lines of defence will be established.
- Front line of defence:
A rockfall protection system is being constructed at the foot of the sloping embankment. This consists of reinforced concrete mesh panels fixed to steel columns, supplemented by star-shaped rockfall protection column heads and connecting U-200 rockfall protection crossbeams. A 2–5 metre wide debris zone is also connected to the system.
- Middle line of defence:
In the middle section of the slope, a similarly designed but simpler debris-trapping steel mesh fence, 3 metres high, is being constructed, which will be installed amongst the existing trees.
- Lower defence line:
Behind the properties, a 2-metre-high debris-trapping net will be erected as a „fence”, secured to steel support posts and integrated amongst the trees.
Earthworks and landscaping
During construction, the excavated material will be used to create a compacted earth embankment on the slope, approximately 1 metre thick and with a 1:1 gradient. The surface will be turfed and fitted with mechanical protection.
Tree felling and environmental considerations
As part of the work, dangerous, leaning or dead trees will be removed; this may only be carried out with a specific permit from the environmental authorities.
The contracting authority has specifically emphasised that particular attention must be paid to the area’s wildlife during the works, with special regard to the nesting seasons and the protection of vegetation.
