The new bridge on the M7 motorway is now open; demolition of the old bridge can begin

Published

Before demolition work begins, the lifting points are prepared, the temporary tensioning anchors are installed and the mobile cranes are positioned.

From Wednesday morning, road users were able to use the new pedestrian and cycle bridge built in the Velence area on the M7 motorway, we wrote about the load testing of which here.

With the opening of the new bridge, demolition of the old bridge will begin as planned. The demolition work will take place over two weekends, on the nights from Saturday to Sunday: 9–10 May and 16–17 May.

The MKIF provides a detailed overview of the changes to traffic arrangements from today, 6 May, until the end of the roadworks on 17 May (see below). It is important to note that on the first weekend night, the affected section of the M7 will be completely closed, whilst on the second weekend night, the carriageway heading towards Budapest will be closed; traffic heading towards Lake Balaton will continue as planned.

This work is taking place prior to demolition

The post also explains that the traffic restrictions prior to the full closure are necessary due to the preparatory work required for the demolition. Among other things, the following will take place at that time:

  • preparing the lifting points,
  • the positioning of temporary tension anchors
  • as well as the installation of the car jacks and their assembly.

Here is how the traffic arrangements will work

The road closures required for the works have been planned on the basis of traffic data from recent years. Consequently, both lanes heading towards Lake Balaton will remain open until 2.00 pm on Saturday, whilst motorists travelling towards the capital will be able to use two lanes in the direction of Budapest on both Saturday and Sunday, except during the full closure.
