Road building
A new section of motorway, a service area and an overpass are to be built at the site of the Hegyeshalom border crossing
Tender Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium has been published for the accessibility improvements at the Hegyeshalom border crossing on the M1 motorway. The notice published on TED relates to phase I of the accessibility improvements,
where the dual two-lane motorway section must be constructed on the site of the former main building at the border crossing.
According to the public procurement documentation, the site being built on the site of the border crossing demolished in 2023 must also include areas essential for border control checks. To carry out this work, the successful tenderer must also draw up the construction drawings based on the available approval plans.
The bridge foundations and the installation of utility lines are already paving the way for the next phase
A 2×2-lane motorway with a continuous length of 1,200 metres is to be constructed on the site of the central building, including the construction of a new road sub-base and pavement structure. At the same time, the pile foundations for the U-turn structure—which will not be constructed during Phase I—must also be provided; this will be built in the central reservation.
Another key element of Phase I is the construction of the foundations for a new national road bridge with a total clear span of 26.4 metres.
In addition to all this, the project includes preparatory work for those project elements not to be carried out in Phase I: specifically, the construction of the necessary utility and drainage system crossings over the motorway. This is to ensure that these works do not disrupt motorway traffic once they are fully completed.
A lorry park and service centre will also be built
The description also sets out which project elements will be implemented in subsequent phases:
- road overpass with a U-turn,
- one toilet block per site and infrastructure elements suitable for complex inspections, such as a covered inspection area, an office building and parking spaces;
- by securing a site for a complex leisure centre and a petrol station at each location,
- a service building on the approach to Budapest;
- as well as an „Autohof”-style lorry park on the outbound side of the road leading to Vienna.
