The Budakalász flood protection system is ready

An important flood protection project has been completed in Budapest: the protective structure built by a consortium of the National Water Authority and the Middle Danube Valley Water Authority plays a key role in managing floods on the Danube and Barát Creek. As we reported earlier, the Aqua-General Kft. general construction project, the PM-art deco Kft. was responsible for the structural engineering tasks of the project, which was carried out with the participation of subcontractors. The CLC-Construct Kft., which included the design of the formwork and the delivery of the formwork materials by MEVA Zsalurendszerek Zrt..

As a result of construction work that began in early March last year, a four-metre wide service bridge will cross the floodgate, fitting into the alignment of the existing flood defence line, and will connect to the Pentecostal flood defence barrier without interruption.

"Each of the new facility's two orifices will be connected to an equivalent pumping station with a hydraulic pumping capacity of five cubic metres per second"

- explained the Water Directorate, adding that pumping is only possible from the direction of the stream into the Danube, as the primary function of the floodgate is to exclude the Danube water from the stream bed during flooding. In addition, the floodgate is capable of diverting unexpected high flows of water from the stream and can handle these extreme events simultaneously.

"With the technical handover of the facility in September 2023, the Budakalász flood protection section and the Csillaghegyi flood protection systems of the Csillaghegyi floodplain have been completed to the safety level required by law" - reads the statement of the Central Danube Valley Water Management Directorate.
