Construction work to strengthen flood protection on the Tisza and Lake Tisza will end in autumn

The embankment of the Tisza River near Martfű will be relocated, and the flood protection system of Lake Tisza will be renewed as part of an investment by the National Water Authority and a consortium of four regional water authorities, according to a press release from the Central Tisza Water Authority. The developments, entitled „Increasing flood safety in the Middle Tisza Valley”, are essential for the safe drainage of the Tisza floodwaters, thus improving flood safety throughout the Tisza Valley. The various elements of the project series implemented under Kötiviép’B Kft. are described in several times reported several times.

Five different parts of the overall development will be delivered:

• Reconstruction of the Lake Tisza protection system
• Martfű Relocation of the embankment on the left bank of the Tisza
• Improvement of the stability of the Hortobágy-Berettyó left bank flood protection embankment on 13 km
• Improving the stability of the left bank of the Tisza river embankment on 37 km
• Reconstruction of the Hernád River

Relocation of the Martfű embankment

On the morning of 29 August, a press conference was held at the headquarters of the Central Tisza Region Water Management Directorate (KÖTIVIZIG) in Szolnok, focusing on the developments taking place in the area of the Directorate. Ferenc Szalay, Mayor of Szolnok Megyei Jogú Város, gave a welcome speech and Gábor Harsányi, Deputy Technical Director of KÖTIVIZIG, reported on the progress of the project.

On the one hand, the left bank of the Tisza at Martfű will be relocated for a length of about 800 metres, after the river approached the embankment at a dangerous level. In addition, as part of the reconstruction of the Lake Tisza protection system, a total of 1,593 metres of anti-surge stone structures will be restored and 2,260 metres replaced. In addition, the Little Tisza and the No. IV control structures will be renewed.

Hydro-mechanisation dredging will affect other sites around the lake:

• 60 metres of flushing channel I,
• the flushing channel IV at 1754 metres,
• the connection of the lower Kis-Tisza for 300 metres,
• the flushing channel VIII at 2759 metres,
• the Kisfüred Cape for 1,287 metres, the Kis-Tisza for 4,600 metres and the IX. flushing canal for 3,038 metres.

Other dredging sites include the mouth of the Jászsági main canal (0+000 - 0+050 canal kilometres), the waiting area of the Kisköre water step, which is 50 years old this year, and the entrance to the Winter Harbour.

Work on the project is expected to be completed by 30.11.2023.
