During the works, the neighbouring houses may be reinforced and insulated, and ÉKM also wants to protect the other buildings by demolishing the radio's nuclear bunker.

As previously reported by our newspaper reported, the demolition work prior to the construction of the Pázmány Campus is being carried out with the utmost care. Among other things, news has now arrived from Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium (ÉKM) that the firewalls of neighbouring buildings, apartment blocks and institutions remaining after demolition will be insulated and reinforced, provided that the owners agree. As a result, the work is expected to be completed at the end of July instead of the planned date at the end of March, according to a statement by ÉKM.

Designed against nuclear attack, now to be demolished

The demolition of the three-storey, 400-square-metre, 400-square-metre, three-wall, 400-square-metre, three-storey facility in the middle of the Palace district, in the historic Eszterházy and Károlyi Palaces, in the neighbourhood of the Palace, presented a major challenge to the experts, as the solid facility, designed to withstand a nuclear attack, had to be dismantled in a way that would cause the least vibration, dust and noise.

The experts have chosen the most suitable technology for the inner-city environment, a combination of concrete cutting and hydraulic demolition tools, so they are using the demolition machines to tackle the reinforced concrete monstrosity centimetre by centimetre, the ministry said.

In order to protect the surrounding properties and to minimise disturbance to the residents, with the agreement and consent of the building owners, nearly 3,000 square metres of facades will be covered with 10 centimetres of rock wool insulation, as well as plastering and tinsmithing.

The Pázmány Campus project also involves neighbourhood-level development

The new campus of Pázmány Péter Catholic University is being built as a priority project and will be the modern new home of one of Hungary's leading higher education institutions. The investment is also a value-preserving and value-creating urban regeneration programme, during which the neglected, architecturally unique, listed buildings located here will be renovated and opened to the public, the image of the Palace District will be refreshed, green spaces in the city centre will be expanded, and streets and squares will be renovated, according to the announcement.
