Major announcement: the Grassalkovich Castle in Gödöllő will be renewed
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár and Sándor Csányi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the OTP Bank and the Hungarian Agar and Life Sciences University (MATE) Foundation announced the large-scale renovation of the Royal Castle in Gödöllő at an on-site press conference on Monday morning.
Queen Elisabeth's favourite castle in Hungary was built by Antal Grassalkovich I. Around six thousand square metres of the 17,000 square metres of the grounds were neglected for decades. The government and OTP Bank are providing 50-50 million euros, or 20-20 billion forints, for its complete reconstruction.
Renewed
-a previously renovated wing of the castle,
-a previously neglected six thousand square metre section,
-a kertje,
-a musical wing,
-buildings for the housing of artefacts,
-The historic beer house will be open again.
The castle, which has been owned and maintained by the university since 2021, will be restored over nine years.
János Lázár, Minister of Construction and Investment, said that this is the biggest public interest commitment in the last 100 years. He added that he would like to see businessmen in Hungary again, who, like their great predecessors, would sacrifice their private fortunes for the country's rise.
