More than 100,000 tiles in 65 shades - the plan for the Hungarian Museum of Architecture is under construction

The Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Centre will be built in the spirit of architectural recycling in the block bordered by Városligeti Fasor and Bajza Street in the capital, according to a statement by the design consortium. In addition to the new main building, two turn-of-the-century historic buildings and two closed-row office buildings will be renovated, and a public city park will also be created. We have already reported on the project several times in our newspaper.

The implementation is carried out through individual project organisation: in addition to the architects of BIVAK and Tér és Forma Szeged Építéstervező are joined by CPM Kft., which is coordinating the general tasks and preparing the technical documentation, with the support of BIM provided by the experts of DANU Mérnökiroda.

Exhibition space, conference space, storage space

The building complex, which will have a useful floor area of almost 27 500 m2, will include 2100 m2 of exhibition space, 550 m2 of conference rooms and more than 2000 m2 of modern warehouse space. The museum and document library's artefacts will be housed in climate-controlled and protected spaces with state-of-the-art mechanical systems for the long-term management and digitisation of the growing collection.

The iconic roof of the main building will be covered with 114712 tiles in 65 different shades of colour. The new public park will welcome visitors with 107 newly installed trees, a themed playground, water play and catering facilities.

This includes not only the unique reception area and interiors of the new main building, but also the planned space simulation installation, where visitors can experience the proportions that define the atmosphere and feel of the interiors through 360-degree projection and actual moving ceilings and walls" - emphasizes György Détári DLA, co-owner and lead designer of CPM.

The interior of the building gets a creative courtyard

In addition to building full-scale models, the building's creative courtyard will also serve as a screening venue for the museum, with a capacity of up to 300 people. "In a modern museum, the exhibition is not just about static objects in display cases, but also includes interactive, audiovisual experience elements and temporary exhibitions that require flexible spaces. In order to provide the best possible visitor experience, the insight provided by three-dimensional models into the spaces of the designed buildings is essential"- emphasizes Tamás Erős, DANU BIM Services Partner.

Value preservation and BIM: the two key words

The plans for the Hungarian Museum and Centre of Architecture were designed with a view to preserving value and looking to the future, they point out. The museum's architectural concept was designed to represent the past, present and future of Hungarian architecture in a dignified way.

An important professional message is the architectural reuse, the above-ground construction 75 %-a is achieved by preserving and refunctionalising existing assets, while the new main building is a contemporary architectural design that fits in with the existing buildings.

They emphasise that for such a complex, multi-stakeholder project, BIM-based design is key, helping communication and decision-making between exhibition designers, building designers and the client. BIM builds on the models to ensure high quality designs and that the building as envisioned is actually built.

"In museums, architecture as a means of artistic expression plays an important role, but exhibition technology can be incorporated into the building in ways that require significant space, mechanical and other requirements. These should also be taken into account in the context of BIM tasks. We see this process as a team effort, and the implementation plan has been developed in consultation and agreement with all disciplines. Digital models allow us to point to hundreds of things in the plan at a time. In this project, 213,527 model elements were created, and in the final phase we found 348 conflicts and problematic details, which were corrected before the implementation process" - points out Tamás Eős.
