The contractor who will rebuild Tokaj's baroque inn has been selected.

The Golden Eagle of Tokaj was once a famous inn.The Baroque building, built in the second half of the 18th century, was also used for vintage balls.

Centuries of past, beautiful future

The Golden Eagle, which was once the ornament of the town of Tokaj, stands on the street line in Saroktelk, to the right of the Roman Catholic Church. The ornate façade of this free-standing, rectangular, single-storey, gabled building is a testimony to the town's wealth. The building's importance is also reflected in its design, which is typical of public buildings: a small, five-axis central trellis distinguishes it from the surrounding houses.

The historic building, which was also used as a social home, is now in very poor condition. Its renovation has been discussed for almost 20 years in connection with investments affecting the city. This opportunity may now arise for Fodor Építőipari Kft. and Fodor Építőipari Kft.. rel="noopener">Fodor Építőipari Kft. and Euro Generál Zrt. consortium: the companies can save the much-seen building for posterity for around 2 billion forints.

The inn could be reborn as a community space: its new functions could include an exhibition space, an event centre and a café, and its garden would also be completely transformed. As revealed in the public procurement documents, the winning bidders will be responsible for renovating and modernising the historic building and modernisation, preparing the approved plans and other necessary documentation for the construction work, conducting consultations, obtaining the necessary heritage protection permits, preparing the implementation plans, carrying out the construction work, and preparing the implementation plans.

Renaissance garden also in the making

Planned to take about three years, its complete exterior-interior reconstruction and landscaping works include the construction of a 616 m2 gross basement, ground floor and first floor loft. About 1200 m2 will be the renovation of the entire façade, where, in addition to plastering, the building will also require the construction of trusses, as the building's plaster is completely missing. After repairing and replacing the stone opening frames, the contractors will also have to build a new terrace (about 90 m2) to the west. While respecting the monumental principles, the windows and the new roof must meet today's energy requirements. This will also require the replacement of the entire roof structure on approximately 865 m2.

The Developer wishes to create a modern Renaissance garden as a fitting complement to the building. The archetypal elements of Italian Renaissance gardens will be displayed in a contemporary setting, but the main organising force of the garden will be water, in order to remain faithful to the history. Around the central element, which can also be used as an event space, vine groves and walkways will screen distracting views in and out of the Renaissance gardens. A greenhouse on the west side of the garden and a cool house under the arbor on the north-west side will be located, while a labyrinth and a kitchen garden with medicinal and herb plants will also be added.
