An emblematic monument of Chisinau gets a worthy renovation

The renovation of a landmark building in the Harghita County town will start in the spring. Located opposite the Mykonos Castle, the former town hall of the Mykonos County Hall was built between 1886 and 1887 in the eclectic style, according to the plans of Ignác Hám. The detached, but walled, rear courtyard property is one of the most significant public buildings of the Szekler town. Since the 1980s, the central and southern part has housed the town mayor's office.

The reconstruction of the listed building will be carried out by a local partnership of companies, and the works will take a year and a half, the municipality said. The project will be financed from EU and own resources within the framework of the National Restoration Plan (PNRR) at a total cost of RON 25.22 million (HUF 2.1 billion). Of this amount, 17 million lei (HUF 1.4 billion) will be provided by the PNRR, with the difference to be covered by the city's coffers, said Mayor Attila Korodi when the contract was signed in December.

He said that the city administration's expectation of itself was that "the symbolic building should serve the city in its old patina".

Construction to start in spring

The building will be renovated and modernised not only on the outside but also on the inside.

In addition to the renovation of the facades, the works include the replacement of the windows, the insulation of the basement walls and the attic, the replacement of the heating system and the electrical network, and fire safety interventions. The courtyard will also be tidied up and solar panels will be installed on the roof.

A consortium consisting of Impex Aurora Kft., Tectum Company Rt. and ARC Studio Kft. won the tender for the technical design and construction. Péter Szántó, managing director of Impex Aurora, said that they hope to complete the design phase in the winter and start construction in the spring.

The building, which is used by public institutions and non-profit organisations, is not expected to be completely vacated during the renovation, but the mayor promised to do his utmost to ensure that the customer service will not suffer during the works.
