What is being built?
A new seven-storey cardiology centre has been opened in the capital
The new Diagnostic and Therapeutic Centre at the SE Városmajori Heart and Vascular Clinic was officially inaugurated on Monday. Béla Merkely, rector of the university, called the construction of the new diagnostic and therapeutic centre a significant milestone, which, in his words, will change everyday life and offer new perspectives for patients, research and education.
A defining development in the history of the university
As he said, the new centre is the largest development in the university's history, with the seven-storey building increasing the clinic's research and patient care area by nearly 50 per cent, with a net area of 4,500 square metres. We also reported on the construction of the facility earlier in our newspaper.
According to the rector, the new building is connected to the main building by a bridge, so that the intensive care units, surgical and interventional operating theatres are accessible in a closed space without any difference in level.
European supercentre
The investment provides everything necessary for them to function as a „European supercentre”; the new building houses a high-tech diagnostic imaging department, two CT and one MRI machines, as well as a state-of-the-art hybrid interventional and electrophysiological laboratory, the rector listed.
According to Béla Merkely's description
Ten new outpatient rooms assist with outpatient care, and a separate eight-bed room has been set up for heart transplant patients and patients requiring circulatory support. In addition, classrooms and research rooms have also been set up in the building.
He emphasised that the Városmajor Clinic has been ranked among the world's top fifty institutions in the field of cardiology and vascular medicine for years, coming in at number 35 in the US News rankings. With the current expansion, the clinic could not only become the largest institution in the region, but also the largest heart transplant centre in Europe, Béla Merkely pointed out.
Best university in Central Europe
Semmelweis University (SE) is the best university in Central Europe, and the goal is for the Budapest medical university to become one of the best universities in Europe and the world in the coming years, said Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation, at the event.
Among other things, Balázs Hankó pointed out that, from an academic, research and internationalisation perspective, SE is already among the world's top 100 universities; the institution ranks 181st in the field of medical sciences, 35th in cardiology and 82nd in pharmaceutical rankings.
