The technical college in Debrecen is to be equipped with modern teaching and practical facilities.

A 6.23 billion forint investment is being carried out at the Brassai Sámuel Technical College in Debrecen. The development will see the construction of new workshops, classrooms and a state-of-the-art sports hall, whilst the existing building will also undergo significant refurbishment and renovation.

According to information published on TED, the contractor for the project put out to tender by the Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium has been awarded to Hunép Építőipari Zrt. . The development site is the property at 3 Víztorony Street, Debrecen.

The aim of the project is to modernise the technical college and expand its capacity.

The institution currently operates across three sites, and this latest investment could help to create a more modern and centralised learning environment.

A new teaching wing following the demolition of old parts of the building

As part of the project, the single-storey sections of the building that cannot be converted cost-effectively will be demolished, including the changing rooms, the old gymnasium, the examination hall and several workshops. The total area affected by the demolition is 1,136.84 square metres.

In their place, a new basement + ground floor + three-storey wing is being built, which will house state-of-the-art workshops, theory classrooms and language classrooms. The gross floor area of the new classroom extension is 1,845.37 square metres, whilst the associated usable floor area exceeds 8,117 square metres.

The development also includes a new „C” type gymnasium, which will be built on the site of the existing sports ground. The facility will have a gross floor area of 1,823.53 square metres and a net floor area of 2,515.63 square metres.

The existing building will also be modernised

Not only are new buildings being constructed, but the existing facility – which was built in several phases – is also being refurbished. The project involves the refurbishment of 4,072.42 square metres of floor space.

The refurbishment works include the creation of a larger staff room, the rationalisation of office space, the extension of the restaurant, and the removal of an existing stairwell.

The technical college’s main building was constructed in the 1960s as a structure comprising a basement, ground floor and two upper floors, to which prefabricated reinforced concrete sandwich-panel wings were added in the 1980s. In recent years, partial energy efficiency upgrades have also been carried out, including the installation of external wall insulation, replacement of windows and doors, and the installation of a solar panel system.

As a result of the investment, the institution’s total usable floor area will reach 14,706 square metres. The total built-up floor area will be 5,089 square metres.

The development will also meet the requirements regarding the proportion of green space, with more than 20 per cent of the site remaining as green space.
