Leier noise barriers are being built along the new four-lane road connecting Győr to Pápa

Durisol noise barriers are continuously being installed in the spectacular project on the 83 road.

Our newspaper regularly reports on one of the largest investments in Western Hungary, the construction of Route 83. The expressway project connecting the two important cities in Transdanubia will be implemented in two main phases, of which 15 structures and two grade-separated junctions (Pápa North, Gyarmat) and a railway overpass will be built on the road connecting to Pápa Airport.

Between kilometre markers 50+500 and 68+641 of this section, the Leier Durisol noise barrier wall system will protect local residents from noise pollution. The Durisol elements will be installed by REC PLUS Kft., as a specialist contractor, which is working on the development as a subcontractor to Colas Út Zrt.. The main contractor for the entire section is Duna Aszfalt Zrt., and the investor is Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium.

Construction of the wall started in the spring, and the road is being built in parallel

Tamás Major, head of the Leier Hungária Kft. business unit, informed us about this part of the development. He said:

With special attention to aesthetics, the work will include the construction of 9800 square metres of wall sections, including 8 escape gates to ensure safety.

The wall construction works started in the spring, with the construction of the screening wall taking place in line with the road construction, so the work areas were handed over in phases.

They can also routinely deliver a major motorway project

Currently, the final phase of the construction of the wall is underway at the Menfőcsanak on-ramp of Highway 83, with the wall being built using a continuous crane and self-loading trailers. The same solution is routinely used on site almost all the time, and it is rarely necessary to use a more powerful crane.

We have already received positive feedback from locals

The construction of the wall is expected to be completed by the end of August 2023, and the sections completed so far are already providing peace of mind for residents from noise pollution. In this context, the branch manager pointed out:

"Leier considers it very important that the wall section not only effectively reduces noise pollution, but also aesthetically and harmoniously blends into our living environment. The completed section of the wall has already received positive feedback from residents that noise pollution has indeed been noticeably reduced."

Durisol is made from environmentally friendly materials and has a unique structure

We also asked about the Durisol noise barrier wall itself and found out that the wall elements are unique because of their material - they are made of wood concrete, and their structure is unique.

The surface of the elements that make up the wall is formed using a cement-bonded woodchip pressing technique, which surrounds a 13-centimetre fixed concrete core.

Thanks to the sandwich structure of the wall, it is doubly efficient:

  • the internal concrete design blocks the sound waves passing through, damping them to a large extent;
  • and the outer shell of the wall acts as a sponge to absorb a significant proportion of sound waves, reducing unwanted sound reflections.

In numerical terms, the Durisol noise barrier wall has an airborne sound attenuation of 30 decibels and a sound absorption of 15 decibels. The panels are prefabricated from block elements using environmentally friendly materials, making them quick and easy to transport. They are also suitable for a wide range of applications, not only around motorways and other transport facilities, but also in areas such as family homes, nurseries, kindergartens, schools and nightclubs.

The construction site was a good opportunity to hold a professional forum

This was presented by Leier on 27 March at a professional forum organised to mark the occasion of the construction. Commenting on the event, which was organised in the world of noise barriers, and more specifically on the world of road-rail noise barriers, Tamás Major said: "the contractors and design partners attending the forum were first given a short tour of the Durisol noise barrier on the 83 motorway, and then they were able to see what we have to offer in our technical presentations." Around forty professionals from all over the country attended the event.
