Major reconstruction work underway on several sections of the M3 motorway

The pavements of the road sections and rest areas will also be renewed by HE-DO, as ordered by M1 Útépítő Kft. and MKIF Zrt..

In mid-March, MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. launched this year's work on the three-year national expressway renovation project known as "levelling". During the largest motorway renovation project in Hungary's history, between 2023 and 2025, 43% of the approximately 1,200 km of main road operated by the Concession Company, 538 km will receive new pavement, in multiple layers where necessary. This renovation affects several sections of the M3 motorway. We are now presenting several project elements implemented by HE-DO, using information published on the company's website.

They work on these sections

The works will affect several sections and rest areas of the M3 motorway: the sections between kms 77+550 and 78+850 on both sides, including the Gyöngyös-Keleti junction, and the right lane between kms 116+000 and 126+000. In addition, sections of the pavements of the Borsókút, Nagyfügedi and Mezőszemere rest areas will be renewed. The old, ageing pavement will be completely removed and a new binding and wearing course will be laid after repairing cracks and installing an asphalt grid. The pavement will be replaced and the pavements will be rebuilt.

The aim of the construction works is to create a safer and more sustainable track structure to cope with the increased traffic load. The project is being carried out under a concession contract on behalf of MKIF Zrt., under the order of M1 Útépítő Kft., and under the execution of HE-DO.

The first sections are already ready

This year's works started on 17 March 2025 and are scheduled to be completed by 31 August. The first sections have already been completed: the right lane between km 77+550-78+850 and the Gyöngyös-East junction have been resurfaced, as well as the 116+000-118+000 km section, and the wearing course of the Nagyfüged rest area has also been completed. Currently, the new asphalt binder and wearing course is being laid on the left-hand side of the Borsókút rest area, and parallel paving is underway on the right-hand side between km 118+000-126+000, with a complete track barrier.

The project is significant not only for its size, but also for its construction. One of the biggest challenges is to keep the traffic flowing at all times while the works are being carried out. The planning and daily organisation must take into account holidays, events in the area and anything else that may be important from a traffic point of view. Rapid response and on-site organisation are key to keeping the renovation on schedule, to which the work and expertise of the project team is essential.

For safer travel

The works to be carried out are part of the operation and renovation obligations undertaken under the concession contract. As the M3 motorway is very busy and carries a significant volume of transit traffic, complete resurfacing and upgrading of the rest areas has become essential. Once the project is completed, these sections of the motorway will not only be safer, but will also provide a more comfortable and predictable journey for road users.
