Construction is under way on the new M44 junction near Kunszentmárton

Construction is currently underway on the new Kunszentmárton junction of the M44 motorway at the 60-kilometre mark of the motorway. Work on the project began in the spring, and a progress report on the current work has now been issued by MKIF Zrt. on the Facebook website.

The development will create a direct link between Main Road 44 and the M44-es autóút. As a result, traffic approaching via Main Road 44 will in future be able to access the expressway directly, meaning it will no longer be necessary to drive through the town to reach it.

The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2027.

The existing flyover is to be widened

As part of the project, the 2×2-lane flyover crossing over Main Road 44 will be widened. A new lane will be built on each side, which will serve as acceleration and deceleration lanes respectively.

In addition, two exit lanes and two entry lanes are also being built. These will connect to the new roundabouts to be constructed on Main Road No. 44, thereby creating a direct link between the expressway and the main road.

In connection with the construction of the junction, a number of other elements will also be implemented, such as:

• 600 metres of cycle path,
• more than 2,000 square metres of noise barriers,
• as well as two new roundabouts.

As part of the green space development project, 70,000 square metres of green space will be created in the junction area, where 12,000 shrubs and evergreen plants will be planted.

The construction of the Kunszentmárton junction is important for transport in the region because it will establish the direct link that is currently missing between Main Road 44 and the M44. This is particularly significant given that the section of the M44 between Kecskemét and Békéscsaba will be fully completed by April 2025, meaning that it will now be possible to travel all the way from the M5 motorway to Békéscsaba on an expressway.
