This is how the modernisation of the Pentele bridge over the river at Dunaújváros is progressing

The operator-general contractor MKIF is working on the bridge with as few closures as possible.

In March, we already wrote about the start of planned maintenance work this year on the 1682-metre-long Pentele Bridge over the Danube, located on the section of the M8 motorway between Dunavecse and Dunaújváros. According to information provided at the time by the operator and contractor MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., the planned maintenance is essential to ensure that traffic continues to flow safely.

 

 

The structure, which was inaugurated in 2007, last had its mud replaced 13 years ago. During periodic bridge inspections, anomalies were found in some structural elements that adversely affect the expected life of the existing spans. This year, therefore, several of the piles and the dilatation structure have had to be replaced.

Another announcement has just been received from the company: as they write, one of the new expansion joints was installed at the beginning of the week, while the other has already been concreted. At the same time, they were also working on preparations for the replacement of the next set of shoes.

It was also recalled that 13 hinges and 8 dilatation structures were replaced during the works currently underway. The current work is currently being carried out to replace the 13 shafts and the replacement of the existing ones.

This is a major engineering challenge, as it is necessary to move these hundreds of kilograms of elements and lift them into place at a height of about 50 metres, with millimetre precision.

 

 

The Pentele Bridge
  • The Pentele Bridge is 1682 metres long, making it one of the longest bridges in Hungary.
  • The bridge consists of five separate steel bridges: two river bridges, one main river bridge and two drive-up bridges.
  • The section that curves over the main riverbed is 307 metres long and rises 50 metres above the Danube.
  • The total weight of the steel structures is nearly 10,400 tonnes - a huge weight that the hinges have to support.
