A new expressway has been added to the Cluj Napoca area

The Cluj-Napoca-Tordatur (Tureni) expressway was opened to motor traffic on Thursday, relieving the Transylvanian city of the previous through traffic.

The just under five-kilometre-long motorway will link the National Route 1 (DN1) and the North Transylvania Motorway (A3), and was signed in July 2023 with a Romanian-Spanish partnership led by Dimex2000 . The project is worth RON 561.6 million (HUF 44 billion) excluding VAT. The road will also include seven bridges and a viaduct.

Freeing Cluj Napoca and Torda from traffic

According to the National Road Infrastructure Management Company of Romania (CNAIR), the opening of the road has increased the length of motorways and expressways in Romania to 1,321 kilometres. Agerpres reported that Cristian Pistol, director of CNAIR, said at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday that although there were difficulties during the works, he was pleased that they had been overcome. The handover of the project was scheduled for February.

The mayor of Cluj Napoca, Emil Boc, said earlier that the completion of the 4.9-kilometre access road will eliminate 1,800 trucks from Cluj Napoca, freeing up the city's main roads, reducing air pollution and travel times.

The new road will also relieve nearby Torda of through traffic. Once completed, cars coming from Szeklerland and Târgu Mures on the motorway to Cluj-Napoca or Northern Transylvania will no longer have to pass through the small town, but can leave the motorway at Tordatour and continue on to Cluj-Napoca or the bypassing Bányabükk-Apahida ring road.
