The Italsofa overpass in Baia Mare will soon be handed over.

The Italsofa overpass, which is being built in the southern part of Baia Mare and is one of the city's most important transport investments, is nearing completion, according to an article published on 8 December by the Romanian newspaper economedia.ro on 8 December. The construction is being carried out by the STRABAG – ARL Cluj consortium.

The total length of the overpass is 780 metres, of which 650 metres is the structure itself.

The construction works are at such an advanced stage that the Romanian National Road Infrastructure Management Company (CNAIR) can already begin preparations for the handover.

A much larger electricity pole than usual was required.

According to Gabriel Zetea, president of the Maramures County Council, one of the most complex tasks of the project was the installation of an electricity pylon on Dumbravei Street, which is 12 metres higher than usual. This was necessary because the road level was raised by approximately 40 centimetres, which also necessitated the relocation of high-voltage cables.

Asphalting is progressing rapidly on the slip roads, and the filling work is practically complete. According to plans, the overpass will be open to traffic around 15 December.

Important transport hub

The project is of particular importance as it significantly reduces traffic congestion on the roads leading into and out of Baia Mare and improves the flow of heavy goods vehicle traffic.

The Italsofa overpass is being built with the support of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The aim of the investment is not only to create safer and more comfortable transport, but also to reduce environmental pollution and boost tourism and the regional economy.

The new flyover will contribute to the long-term economic development of Baia Mare and its surroundings, improve traffic safety, and facilitate everyday transport for both locals and travellers.
