A quarter of the roadways maintained by MKIF were renewed in a single year.
The company has published a spectacular summary of the renovation of the expressways it manages. The work did not only affect the top layer of asphalt. Where the condition of the surface warranted it, the deeper structural elements – the binder and base layers – were also replaced, thus ensuring the long-term stability of the tracks, they write.
According to the announcement by MKIF, the main track 24% has been renovated, meaning that 4.5 million square metres have been resurfaced with new asphalt. The company used a total of almost 1 million tonnes of asphalt for the work.
In addition to the track structures, other elements of the infrastructure have also been renewed: 78 bridges and overpasses, as well as 35 rest areas, have undergone renovation this year.
The M3 and M1 motorways have undergone the most significant rejuvenation.
In 2025, work was carried out on a total of 10 expressways: sections of the M1, M15, M3, M30, M35, M4, M7, M8, M85 and M86.
Most of the work was carried out on the M3 motorway: the total volume for this year is 42%, with almost 1.8 million square metres of new surfacing completed here. As a result, 62.9% of the M3 motorway surface is now between 0 and 5 years old, which is a significant improvement compared to the situation in 2022.
The second largest renovation took place on the M1 motorway, where work was carried out on an area of nearly 1 million square metres. While three years ago, a significant portion of the road surface was worn out, by the end of 2025, a spectacular turnaround had taken place: more than half of the M1's surface (73.4%) is now between 0 and 5 years old.
Overall, only 34% of the expressway network operated by MKIF has pavement that is more than five years old, while 66% has been resurfaced in recent years, making it much safer for traffic.
Scheduling adjusted to traffic
This year's works began in March and were organised by the company in line with traffic demands. On the M7 motorway, for example, there were no diversions or renovations between the M0 and Balatonvilágos during the summer holiday period, either towards Lake Balaton or the capital, thus ensuring uninterrupted traffic between the lake and Budapest.
The commitment to bring the level up has been fulfilled.
Not only did MKIF Zrt. successfully complete the renovation programme planned for 2025, but it also fully complied with the (the levelling work was carried out in accordance with the contract where the pavement conditions of the sections taken over for operation and renovation on 1 September 2022 did not meet the required technical standard).
The largest expressway renovation project in Hungary's history began in March 2023. Over the past three years, as a result of large-scale resurfacing work carried out for levelling and traffic safety purposes, more than two-thirds of the approximately 1,300 kilometres of main roads operated by MKIF, 70% has been renewed on 13 million square metres, and 315 bridges and 68 rest areas have also been renovated.
What can we expect in 2026?
Renovations will continue in 2026 on the MKIF Zrt. network, as worn surfaces need to be replaced due to depreciation, and large-scale surface replacements are still necessary to ensure traffic safety.
However, the volume of work is not as extensive as it has been over the past three years. According to plans, construction will begin in the spring, and until then, no large-scale resurfacing is expected on the tracks operated by MKIF.
