Road building
Avar graves and an Árpád-era village were also found during the expansion of the M1 motorway.
As indicated in the latest MKIF in its latest Expansion Diary: an important part of the work on the M1 motorway is the archaeological survey and excavation of the areas. This includes reviewing historical sources, examining aerial photographs and conducting geophysical research.
Based on preliminary investigations, trial excavations are carried out on each occasion. The purpose of these is to provide a more accurate picture of whether there are any finds or sites in the area that need to be protected or excavated.
The aim of this process is to balance infrastructure development with the protection of cultural and historical values, they write.
More than 100 medieval graves and a village from the Árpád era were also found.
In the autumn of 2025, during archaeological excavations, the National Institute of Archaeology experts have uncovered the remains of a Late Avar period row cemetery. A total of more than 100 graves and artefacts have been unearthed in the area, dating from the 8th to the 11th centuries.
The Flóris Rómer Museum of Art and History experts have also uncovered traces of an 11th-century settlement from the Árpád era, which was occupied for only a short time, featuring houses, ovens, ditches and a clearly visible settlement layout.
„The recordings,” they emphasised, "have only now been made public, in consultation with archaeologists, in order to protect the finds."
After their removal, the earthworks necessary for the expansion began.
Always stay up to date
As usual, information about changes to traffic regulations and closures will be provided in the MKIF information group, which anyone can join freely.
The following animation provides information on the schedule and work processes involved in transitioning from the original traffic pattern to the new widened lane, as well as what the 2+1+1 diversion entails:
