Another downtown street is being developed in Pest: the green space on Wesselényi Street will increase tenfold

Wesselényi Street will become greener and more pedestrian-friendly thanks to a nearly 900 million forint development project in Erzsébetváros.

According to the press release announcing the launch of the project in District VII, the central section of Wesselényi Street in Erzsébetváros will be developed as part of the approximately 884 million forint EU-funded project.

Transport changes for pedestrians

The aim of the redevelopment is to prioritise pedestrian and bicycle traffic, reduce motor vehicle traffic and significantly increase green spaces. The current green space of only 75 square metres will increase tenfold to approximately 759 square metres as a result of the development, with the planting of 48 new trees and flower beds.

In addition to the above, the road surface and pavements will be renewed, and extended lanes in several places will help to reduce speeding. The priority crossings will enable safer crossing for pedestrians, pushchairs and wheelchair users. New pedestrian crossings will be built at Rózsa, Szövetség and Vörösmarty streets, and a one-way cycle lane and speed limit will also be introduced on the affected section.

They also built on feedback from the public.

Street furniture also improves the usability of public spaces: a total of 36 chairs, 9 waste bins, 5 dog waste bins and 3 dog urinals will be installed.

The local community was also involved in the planning of the project: a public forum was organised on 20 January, at which chief architect Dániel Takács presented the plans. In addition, until 10 February, comments on the project could also be submitted electronically. The aim of the investment is to create a more liveable, healthier and safer urban environment for the residents of Erzsébetváros and those using the thoroughfare.
