This development will establish a cycle route between the two towns in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County.

Construction has begun on the new cycle path linking Mátészalka and Ópályi. According to information from MTI, the project – which is being carried out with a non-repayable grant of over 538 million forints – is being funded from the national central budget under the European Regional Development Fund.

The data from the Electronic Public Procurement System (EKR), the works will be carried out by Birkás-Bau Szolgáltató Kft. . The aim of the project is to close a gap in the region’s cycle network and establish a link between Ópályi and Mátészalka.

The deadline for completion of the project is 31 December 2027.

Two-way cycle path alongside Road 4117

As part of the development, a two-way cycle path approximately 1.7 kilometres long will be constructed along Road 4117 within the built-up area of Ópályi. The route runs from the junction of Árpád Street and Dózsa György Street all the way to the junction of Széchenyi István Street and Fekesszegi Road.

The cycle path, with a surface width of 2.55 metres, will be constructed using a modern asphalt track structure, with a multi-layered stabilisation and frost-proof base. As part of the development, pavements, road junctions and crossings will also be constructed, and a reinforced track structure will be installed at gateways and connecting roads.

The new route also crosses a canal

The planned section affects the Jármi–Paposi canal as well as several drainage ditches, so hydraulic engineering works are also part of the project. As part of the project, paved and earthen ditches will be constructed, and utility relocations and street lighting works will also be carried out.

According to the EKR documentation, a new section of gas pipeline is also being built; in addition, the replacement and protection of telecommunications cables, as well as work on the electricity network, are required for the project to be carried out.

Smart bench coming soon

One of the unique features of the project will be the 8-seater smart bench to be installed along the route, which will be powered by a solar panel system. Among other things, the bench will feature USB and wireless chargers, a 4G hotspot function, environmental sensors, touchscreens and LED night lighting.

As part of the development, a digital advertising display will also be installed.

Afforestation and environmental measures

During the works, 26 rows of trees will be planted, and topsoil spreading and landscaping work will also be carried out. The project also includes archaeological supervision, surveying work and the implementation of temporary traffic diversions.
