Plans are in place to redevelop the area around Vértesi út in Debrecen with a new junction and a grade-separated crossing

The significance of this development lies in the fact that, in addition to replacing the level railway crossing on Vértesi út, Main Road No. 4 will be improved with a new junction, pedestrian and cycle links, and road connections suitable for future lane expansion.

Second (this time conditional) public procurement procedure has been launched by Debrecen City Council to prepare for the conversion of the Vértesi út railway level crossing into a grade-separated junction, as well as the development of the junction on Main Road No. 4. The successful designer will be required to prepare planning permission and construction drawings, including the design of the new road section totalling approximately 950 metres, pedestrian and cycle routes, and the associated utility networks.

 

 

Vértesi Road may be rebuilt over a stretch of 650 metres

One of the key elements of the design brief is the approximately 650-metre-long section of road between Gázvezeték Street and Main Road No. 4.

A 2×1-lane layout is to be designed for this section, whilst the existing level crossing with railway line 100 would be converted into a grade-separated junction. The existing level railway crossing would be removed.

The designer’s task also includes examining the design of the roads connecting to this section of road, taking into account the planned elevation profile.

A separate facility for pedestrians and cyclists must also be designed along the entire length of the relevant section of Vértesi út.

 

A new junction may be built on Main Road 4

Another key element of the development is the new sorting junction planned in the vicinity of kilometre marker 221+425 on Main Road No. 4 .

The junction must be designed on the basis of a traffic study, and a separate traffic lane must be provided for each turning direction. The plans must also address the routing of pedestrian and cycle traffic.

According to the tender specifications, traffic control using traffic lights must be designed for the junction , and this must be co-ordinated with the surrounding traffic-light-controlled junctions.

 

It must also be compatible with the designs for the UVATERV and the Speciálterv

The current planning is not independent of the transport plans already drawn up or currently being drawn up in the region. When designing the geometry and elevation of the junction on Main Road 4, the designer must take into account UVATERV Zrt. for the conversion of Main Road 4 to a 2×2-lane carriageway.

Consideration must also be given to the plans for the rural cycle path between Ebes and Debrecen, designed by SpeciálTerv Civil Engineering Kft.. Consequently, the design of the junction currently under construction and the associated pedestrian and cycle infrastructure must be consistent with these plans.

 

The development is also linked to the collector road designed by Terv-Tár

Following the planned junction on Main Road 4, the development continues along a further section nearly 300 metres long. On this section, a link must be designed between the main road junction and the collector road designed by Terv-Tár Bt. as part of the Tócó Valley project.

The new link road would be designed as a 2×1-lane carriageway; however, the plans must be drawn up in such a way that this section of road can be expanded to 2×2 lanes at a later date. A separate facility for pedestrians and cyclists must also be designed on the north-eastern side of the carriageway.

Together, the two road sections comprise 950 metres of new or to-be-reconstructed road infrastructure; a section of Vértesi Road approximately 650 metres long and a connecting section of nearly 300 metres following the main road junction.

 

Rainwater drainage and utility planning

The public procurement contract does not relate solely to the design of road surfaces and junctions. The scope of the work also includes the associated stormwater drainage, road construction, and the construction of footpaths and cycle paths, as well as the design of the relevant public utilities. The tender specifically mentions the design tasks relating to street lighting, telecommunications, and drinking water and sewerage networks.

The designer must document each specialist area, as well as any other associated facilities, separately, and must prepare all the plans required for the project’s implementation.
