Almost 10 kilometres of embankment on the Tisza River protects Ópusztaszer from flooding
With the help of a 970 million HUF investment, the embankment on the right bank of the Tisza in Csongrád-Csanád county was raised and covered for more than nine kilometres, significantly improving the conditions for flood protection.

P Péter Kozák, head of the Lower Tisza Water Directorate (ATIVIZIG), said at the event presenting the results of the project on Wednesday that the development is of particular importance for the flood safety of four settlements - Baks, Dóc, Pusztaszer and Ópusztaszer. The condition of the embankment was a major operational problem, with the unpaved road almost impassable in adverse weather conditions.

Sabolcs Frank, Head of the Flood Protection Department of ATIVIZIG explained that the construction of the protection lines on the Lower Tisza started in the mid-19th century. The Petres dam burst in this area prior to the 1879 Szeged flood, and during the 2006 flood, the embankment on the salvaged side slipped on a section.
The project was implemented in the northern part of the Szeged floodplain, from the bridge at Algyő to the mouth of the Dong River main canal. The entire floodplain is home to 183 500 people, and the development will directly improve the protection of four settlements.
The project can be divided into two parts: the embankment has been raised to the flood level - by 20-30 centimetres - on 9276 metres.
