Water management
Frequent pipe bursts will be eliminated thanks to this just completed project in Nagykanizsa
The sewerage network in Nagykanizsa was modernized with a budget of about 900 million HUF: in two densely populated streets, drinking water pipes older than 100 years had to be replaced, Nagykanizsai Városfejlesztő Kft. informed MTI. The design and construction tasks were carried out by a consortium of Szabadics Zrt. and Aquaprofit Zrt..
The work started in April and was completed by the end of September, with the replacement of the pipes and the installation of three new energy-saving booster pumps. Of the 3.7 kilometres of pipes replaced on Teleki Street and Platan Line, 70 per cent were in poor condition, having been laid between 70 and 100 years ago. Pipe bursts occurred almost every month, especially on Teleki Street, where more than 100-year-old pipes were replaced during the project.
Ageing network needs further investment
The communication also points out that the total length of the water distribution network in Nagykanizsa is 154 kilometres, of which only 38 percent is made of plastic, the rest is made of asbestos cement and steel pipes. However, 60 percent of the network was built 50 to 75 years ago and the age of the pipes has significantly exceeded the lifetime foreseen at the time of construction. Of the total drinking water network in Nagykanizsa, 10 percent is classified as good, 30 percent as medium and 60 percent as poor.
According to the announcement, the city government has won almost HUF 641 million in non-reimbursable EU funding for the reconstruction of the water utility network of Teleki Street and Platán Row under the Széchenyi 2020 programme. The city's assembly provided an additional HUF 289 million of its own funds for the project.
