A fifth of the prizes in this year's twenty-third edition of the Construction Excellence Awards were awarded to projects carried out by Market Építő Zrt..

This year, for the twenty-third time, the Board of Trustees of the Construction Industry Master Award Foundation (ÉMA) announced the call for entries for the Construction Industry Quality Award on behalf of the founders and the seven participating professional organisations. In keeping with tradition in the sector, the awards were presented at the annual general meeting of the ÉVOSZ (National Association of Construction Contractors) on the morning of 7 December, along with the Lechner Ödön Awards and numerous other important awards, considered the most important professional recognition in the construction industry.

2023 Quality Awards were awarded to four projects implemented by Market Építő Zrt., which clearly demonstrates the performance, significance and quality of the work of one of Hungary's most influential construction companies. The main criteria for the evaluation were

a general architectural and technical assessment of the building;
the technical-technical quality and professionalism of the execution;
the economic viability and operational feasibility of the investment;
and cooperation between those who create the facility, in particular investors, designers and builders.

In the following, the technical directors of these four award-winning projects will give you a closer look at the winning buildings.

MOL CAMPUS

As we learned from Gergely Baumann, the project's technical director (his technical co-director was András Wolf), Market participated as the general contractor in the construction of MOL Campus project, so there were difficulties in every phase of construction and every major specialised task, as well as unique solutions in Hungarian building construction. They had been preparing for these challenges since the tender period, as the base slab of the tower block was the first time such a large amount of concrete had been poured at one time in Hungary; it was the first time that sliding formwork and fibre shields of this size had been used, and the first time that tower cranes of this size had been used. In addition to the structural engineering, the construction of the façade was also a huge engineering feat, as was the installation of the tallest lifts and the use of numerous „prototype products” in the interior design, each of which had to be custom-made.

"It's always an experience to create something that few or maybe no one has done before", the director added.

He stressed that working in such a large team was a special experience, as the project team for the Market Építő Zrt. alone numbered nearly 100 people, and the peak number of subcontractors exceeded 3000. This project required the incorporation of many elements not seen elsewhere, and it is these challenges that are most stimulating for engineers. Although this was not the first NIBE Award-winning project in which he has taken a leading role, "the sense of exhilaration remains and the expectations are not diminished," he added.

OTP M12 office building

Norbert Farkas, technical director of the OTP M12 office building project, was that they had to organise a building of this scale as if it were a building on a vacant lot, as the site conditions were similar. Most of the construction period was overshadowed by the COVID pandemic, so they had to introduce and enforce extra precautions to ensure that construction could continue without disruption.

"Building up the bio-philia," he recalled, "was a big challenge for us, both technologically and organisationally."</big

Most of the trees were imported (over 200), and it was a huge undertaking to incorporate them into the wall frames of the completed building. The indoor plants are weather and dust sensitive, so they could only be placed at the last minute, and the 5-7 metre trees had to be moved through the fully finished, painted building. The custom ceramic wall cladding was made specifically for this building, so they had to determine in advance exactly how many tiles they needed, because they could only produce more tiles for a minimum quantity of 3000 m². The design concept for the cold tiling on the ground floor was to continue the lines of the interior tiling in the garden tiling, and to achieve this, the organic colour lines of the large-panel interior cold tiling had to be matched to the exterior terraway tiling. This was finally achieved by continuous geodetic markings.

It took three years of hard work to complete the project, but despite this, they managed to build the office building with a very good team. Coupled with a reliable and cooperative investor, they managed to complete the project by working together towards a common goal.

"It is a great honour and a great pride for me to have been in charge of this exemplary project," he added.

The large-scale office building of Hungary's leading bank, even by Budapest standards, was built to an exceptional standard by the employees, of which all participants can be justly proud.

BOSCH Campus

According to Dániel Szabó, technical director of the BOSCH Campus project, the biggest challenge of the task was its size, as they had to construct a building with the same dimensions as the Telekom headquarters. The outbreak of COVID and the war made it unexpectedly difficult to meet the deadlines, but thanks to an excellent subcontractor structure, they managed to overcome all problems.

"This was difficult to manage for such a large and highly labour-intensive project, and the project was coming to an end at the peak of a decade of construction"

- recalled Dániel Szabó, adding that what he really remembered was the need to build a complex complex including office and laboratory space. You could say that it is a hybrid of a factory and a high-end office building, which is why the spectrum of construction was very broad.

"This is the second time I have had the pleasure of winning a NIBE Award with a house I have built," he said. It always reaffirms that our team is working well, that we are going in the same direction and that the project is worth the effort because it has a return."

Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher

When renovating or rebuilding a historic building, every detail must be carefully considered, emphasised Sándor Bajnok, technical director of the general construction of Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher. Among the thousand tasks, the director highlighted the demolition of the existing structure, its reinforcement and the new construction tasks. Reinforcing the structure is always a major challenge in the case of an old building, which is also located in the city centre, a difficult environment from a work organisation point of view.

"The saying 'don't change the winning team' was formulated in my mind at the very beginning of the work, and after the construction was completed, I can say that it worked completely" - recalled Sándor Bajnok.

For him, this meant that a few years ago, in the same configuration (client-designer-general contractor), he was able to work on the renovation of a similar historic building on Andrássy Road, which also won a prize.

"This project was destined for success from the start," he said, "and of course I am very proud to have been involved in the management of another award-winning building."

And the quality of the finished building is a tribute to the hard work, perseverance and dedication of everyone involved.
