The VEMÉV-SZER and LATEREX will create a swimming pool with a competition pool and a training pool in the vicinity of the Szekszárd spa.

In Szekszárd, on 24 May, the consortium of VEMÉV-SZER Kft. and LATEREX Építő Zrt. took over the work site of the half-finished municipal swimming pool. The project is needed because the city's swimming pool, built in the 1970s, was closed in 2015 for structural reasons and has since been used as a temporary covered pool by the 34,000 inhabitants of the city.

As our newspaper previously reported, the project could begin after the winner of the public procurement tender for the construction of the new swimming pool was announced in 2018. The announcement at the time envisaged a new three-storey building on the site of the existing beach and water park, connected to the existing main building. The construction project began, but according to an article published by TEOL last year, in 2022, the city council decided to terminate the construction contract for the swimming pool investment by mutual agreement.

Redesign also needs to be carried out

The official event was also attended by the Deputy State Secretary for Building Investments on behalf of the investor Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium (ÉKM). Zoltán Nyul recalled that the basic objective of ÉKM was to complete the previously abandoned project. "We are pleased to say that today the contract with the consortium enters into force and work starts."

His speech also revealed that the backbone of the building is a competition pool and a training pool. On the background to the development, he said that the completion of the swimming pool would be funded by the government. He stressed that, compared to the original project, there will be a change in design to take into account operational aspects.

After takeover, the project will restart from 60 percent completion

The event on Friday was attended by Ottó Boross, Managing Director of VEMÉV-SZER Kft. and Attila Sztankov, CEO of LATEREX Építő Zrt., representing the contractors. Speaking on behalf of the consortium, Ottó Boross stressed that they are working with an excellent consortium partner, LATEREX Építő, to implement the project, which is scheduled to be handed over by the end of next summer. As a similar reference, he pointed to the sports swimming pool in Veszprém, which was one of the most successful swimming pool projects in recent years and was also carried out jointly. "We are bringing a very well-knit team with internal cohesion to the project, and at the end of it we want the people of Szekszárd to be proud of our work," he added.

At the inauguration event, János Gyurkovics, Deputy Mayor of Szekszárd, stressed that this moment has been long awaited in the city. He added that the completion of the development will create a recreation centre, as the adjacent swimming pool will complement the water park and the sports complex.
