Roof first

Depending on whether you want to use the attic for storage or as living space, you will need to insulate the roof. If it is to be used as an attic, the roof structure should be given special attention. In the case of the Kádár cottages, we typically find concrete beam and brickwork solutions with slag filling, but it is not uncommon to find a wooden slab covered with thatch and then covered with a roofing felt to serve as a ceiling. In this method, slag or mud was applied as insulation to the plastered ceiling in the attic, which was later re-plastered.

As these methods are now considered to be very outdated in terms of energy efficiency, insulation is the best value for money investment. It is advisable to use 20-25 cm of mineral wool or EPS as insulation material.

If you are going to use the area under the roof as a living space, you can insulate it properly with PIR/PUR rigid foam boards above the rafters.

However, the condition of the roof is not only an issue from an insulation point of view when you look at the cubic houses. The condition of the rafters and roof tiles should also be assessed. Old clay tiles have a much lower resistance compared to today's solutions, and also lack the surface treatments that can both increase their lifespan and contribute to a comfortable living environment.
