Bound track
Development works are underway on the railway lines around Szeged
Complex works are being carried out on several sections of Szeged's railway network, MÁV Zrt. announced on 3 April 2025.
From 6 to 17 April, the track work will be carried out between Kiskundorozsma and Szeged-Rendező, Szeged-Rendező and Szeged-Rókus, and Szeged-Rendező and Röszke, as well as at these stations. During the week and a half, shrub clearance will be carried out on the Szeged-Békéscsaba line, track replacement, track rehabilitation and regulation, and switch (siding) replacement on the Budapest-Szeged main line and on the Szeged-Rendező section of the Röszke line, at the site of the January derailment.
Permanent restoration of the tracks and sidings at the site of the derailment
On 25 January, two wagons of a freight train carrying containers derailed at Szeged-Rendező station. The track was damaged over several hundred metres, affecting rail traffic on the main line in Szeged. According to the railway company, the tracks were temporarily repaired over a period of three days to allow traffic to resume as soon as possible, and rail traffic was temporarily allowed to run at reduced speed. However, the permanent restoration of the damaged track will now take place.
The experts regularly checked and evaluated the temporarily restored section of track and, depending on the results of the tests, decided to gradually increase the speed.
Rail replacements, track rehabilitation and control, and siding replacement will be carried out at the derailment site. Following the completion of the works and successful rehabilitation, the current speed limit will be lifted from 18 April, bringing the permitted speed to the original 60 km/h from the current 40 km/h. This will reduce delays, improve train punctuality on the main line and eliminate the need for train replacement on the Röszke line
- they said.
The electrification of the Röszke line and the Szeged delta railway line to be completed in the summer
As we previously reported, the renovation of the Szeged-Rendező and Röszke border section is currently underway, as described in V-Híd Építő Zrt..
Due to increased freight traffic at Röske station, the mechanical earthing of the overhead line system is expected to be completed by mid-summer this year. The electrification of the delta track will also be completed by then. On the Szeged-Röszke-Szabadka line, the start of electric traction operations will take place after the commissioning of the domestic system and the energisation of the overhead line network on the Serbian side, planned for this autumn.
- they wrote.
According to the information, negotiations are ongoing with the Serbian railway company, and their success will determine the start of the electric operation. After the delta track is put into operation, freight trains from Röszke to Budapest and from there to Röszke will be able to continue to run through Szeged-Rendező station without passing through the station.
Thanks to the improvement of the safety equipment and the construction of the delta track, once the equipment is in place, the closure time and frequency of the Tompai kapu and Szabadkai road crossings can be reduced, as most of the freight traffic will avoid these crossings.
Due to renovations and maintenance work, there will be temporary half-lane closures and complete closures at the Dorozsmai út and Szabadkai út crossings. For details and further timetable changes, please visit the railway company's website.
