Next year, journey times between Debrecen and Tiszafüred may be reduced by 15 minutes

Several simultaneous renovation and maintenance works are underway on the Debrecen–Füzesabony line (No. 108). As pointed out in the MÁV announcement, the aim is to make rail transport more reliable and competitive, reduce journey times, and thus offer a realistic and attractive alternative to the new automotive plants in Debrecen and, of course, to those living in the region. The proximity of Lake Tisza could also give fixed-track transport a significant role in tourism.

The MÁV has also carried out maintenance work between Hortobágy and Ohat-Pusztakócs stations using its own resources in the past. During this time, rails were replaced, concrete sleepers repaired, track alignment was carried out and the previously unknown soil contamination at the Balmazújváros station, which had been discovered during the renovation work and had hampered the work, was removed.

Rehabilitation of the Hortobágy section completed

The renewal of the Füzesabony-Debrecen line has entered a new phase. The station at Balmazújváros, which is currently being rebuilt, will be open to traffic on two tracks on 1 September, and maintenance work, which will involve continuous closures, has also been completed between Hortobágy and Ohat-Pusztakócs.

From 1 September until the next phase of the reconstruction, trains between Debrecen and Fyzesabony will be operated only between Látókép and Balmazújváros.
The replacement buses will run on a longer, different route instead of the insertion services, the trains between Debrecen and Balmazújváros, Hortobágy and Tiszafüred.

Further night-time changes are expected on the line during the second half of September:

• from the evening of 15 September to dawn on 19 September in Füzesabony and Poroszló,
• from the evening of 19 September to dawn on 23 September between Poroszló and Tiszafüred

at night, there will also be a large machine track control, so passengers will be able to travel by replacement bus instead of several trains between Füzesabony-Egyek-Tiszafüred.

Significant improvements to rail transport in the region

From 2026 onwards, the Debrecen-Tiszafüred line will see a significant improvement in service, as the renovations will reduce train running times on the Debrecen-Balmazújváros-Tiszafüred section by up to 15 minutes. The current punctuality of around 75-80% is expected to rise to over 90%, meaning that from the second half of next year, 9 out of 10 trains will be able to run on time on this line.
