A modern maintenance base may be built for domestically manufactured super trains
A call for tenders for the design of a motor train maintenance workshop in Szombathely has been published in the EU Public Procurement Bulletin .
GYSEV Zrt. announced last year that it had ordered a fleet of 11 new FLIRT-type InterCity motor trains from the manufacturer Stadler. The current design task is to create the technical background for this fleet development.
A new, modern maintenance base may be built
The designer's task is to design a thermally insulated workshop hall with a net floor area of approximately 5,300 m² and a cornice height of 10 metres. The hall will also include a traditional building section with an office function of approximately 400 m².
The development also includes significant railway infrastructure construction: at least 3,500 linear metres of track will be built, with the following main units:
- three-track maintenance and repair hall;
- single-track washing hall;
- workshops, warehouses, offices and social rooms.
The hall must be capable of servicing at least three electric multiple units, each 106 metres long, at the same time. The planned track network is designed for a speed of 20 km/h and an axle load of 225 kN, with a UIC54 system and a seamless structure. The tracks inside the hall will have a pit and side track design.
The project also includes:
- construction and conversion of overhead line systems;
- creation of a new street lighting network;
- FET system conversion;
- expansion of telecommunications systems;
- the development of the entire public utility connection infrastructure and its replacement as necessary;
- road access, internal road network, paving and parking facilities.
Complex design tasks
The winning designer will be responsible for preparing the approval and implementation plans, as well as obtaining all necessary permits from the authorities, asset managers, public utility companies and public road operators.
Part of the task:
- preparation of preliminary archaeological documentation;
- participation in the public procurement procedure to be launched for the implementation;
- professional support for the customer;
- preparing plan modifications and cover plans, if necessary;
- comprehensive design supervision during the construction period;
- Preparation of railway sector plans, including the necessary NoBo, DeBo, AsBo and system integrity certifications.
Deadline for submitting bids: 16 January 2026.
Fittings that meet the latest international standards are manufactured in our country.
The railway company announced in September 2025 announced that the final exterior and interior design of the vehicles had been completed. The car bodies are being manufactured at the Stadler plant in Szolnok. The first trains are expected to arrive in the last quarter of 2027, and the IC motor train fleet will be complete in the first quarter of 2028. The modern vehicles will be in continuous service on the Sopron-Budapest and Szombathely-Budapest routes from the end of 2027.
The energy-efficient trains, built in accordance with the latest international standards, will be capable of speeds of up to 160 km/h. The vehicles, which will have both 1st and 2nd class carriages, will feature flexible seating arrangements, providing more seats in winter and space for up to 18 bicycles in summer.
Passenger comfort will be ensured by, among other things, air-conditioned, low-floor passenger compartments, a modern passenger information system, additional luggage racks and a dining area equipped with food and drink vending machines.
During the design process, the technical needs of those who wish to work while travelling were also taken into account: in addition to the usual Wi-Fi connection and charging sockets, USB-C chargers will be installed in every seat, and a new feature will be tablet and smartphone holders on the back of the seats.
The contract signed last March is of great significance for domestic rail transport, as the last time new InterCity motor trains were purchased in Hungary was exactly 30 years ago.
