134 guest rooms and 34 suites will be available for guests, with special attention paid to preserving the building's form and heritage.

The complete renovation of Hotel Gellért in Budapest has begun, in accordance with historic preservation regulations, with the aim of preserving the building's historical heritage and restoring the hotel to its former glory, according to a statement by BDPST Group based on a statement by Index.

The investor plans to reopen the building as an iconic hotel in Budapest, as the first unit of the Mandarin Oriental to be operated in Hungary.

Archival photos and plans are used to reconstruct the flagship Great Hall

The hotel has preliminary plans to create 134 guest rooms, including 34 suites, and three of the hotel's main interiors - the Lobby, the Danube Room and the Tapestry Room - will be reconstructed largely to their original splendour, based on archival museum photographs and plans.

The interiors are designed by the renowned Alexander Waterworth Interiors Ltd London interior design studio.

"The renovation of Hotel Gellért is both a value saving and a value creating project. This project is not only about preserving the past of an iconic building, but also about re-establishing the hotel as a modern, internationally renowned entity in the heart of Budapest."

- stressed Zoltán Kecskeméthy, Managing Director of BDPST Real Estate Development.

One of the capital's best-known buildings is being renovated without a tower crane

In the first phase of the renovation, DVM Group as general contractor will carry out the non-structural demolition and foundation reinforcement works. A key criterion in the selection process for the contractor was that no tower cores or external waste chutes would be used, thus protecting the building's façade and the city's skyline, they say. The statement also stressed that

The hostel was salvaged before the works, and some of the furnishings and fittings were sold, donated to museums and donated to various institutions. All demolished materials will be handled in accordance with the relevant regulations. Waste sorting is a priority, so materials that are harmful to the environment and health, such as asbestos, are filtered and safely removed on site before they are transported.

The hotel will be operated by the internationally renowned Mandarin Oriental Group, a group of companies ranked number one in the CNBC US News Television Channel's Best Luxury Hotels brands 2023 list, according to the release.
