Time capsule placed in the foundation of the new main building of Hungaroring

A defining moment in the history of Hungarian sport has arrived, with both Market and Bayer Construct working on the construction of a major project.

The contractors have arrived at an exceptional moment

On behalf of the construction consortium, Zoltán Juhász, technical director of Market Építő Zrt., spoke, according to hungaroring.hu.

"Today we are part of an exceptional moment, which will define the future of Hungarian motorsport and at the same time sanctify its rich traditions," said Zoltán Juhász, "It is a great honour and an inspiring professional challenge for the Market Építő Zrt. and Bayer Construct Zrt. to work on the Hungaroring conversion. We have undertaken to set a pace in the construction that is in line with the standards of the circuit and Formula 1 racing, ensuring that all the conditions are in place for the professional staging of future races. We all know that an investment of this magnitude requires not only technical expertise but also exceptional teamwork and organisation - our partnership with Bayer has all the values listed here."

Interesting data were presented on, inter alia, the following.

  • 564 people currently work in the field,
  • 641 piles were driven when the foundation of the main building was laid,
  • and 730 piles for the main roof.

In addition, 20,885 m3 of concrete and 4,793 tonnes of reinforcing steel were also processed. In the main building, 2 km of protective pipe was installed, while 3 km of concrete embedded protective pipe was installed in the main arena building and 8 km of protective pipe was installed in trenches as part of the race management system. The amount of earth moved was 99,800 cubic metres for the cutting and 33,875 cubic metres for the embankment construction.

A piece of the old main building has been added to the time capsule

The metal time capsule, decorated with the national ribbon, was placed by Gergely Gulyás, Minister of Prime Minister's Office and Zsolt Gyulay, CEO of Hungaroring Sport Zrt.. It contains a 1986 and a recent Nemzeti Sport, the former with an introduction to the first F1 race in Hungary and the latter with an article on the state of the restoration.

In addition to the cards, the capsule also contains a piece of the old main building and a porcelain arch, which also contains a personal letter written by Zsolt Gyulay and addressed to the future president of the institution, for 2064.

Gergely Gulyás pointed out that 2026 will be the 40th anniversary of the first F1 race in Hungary, by which time the facility will undergo a complete renovation, while the original route of the Hungaroring will be retained.

"The results of the related public procurement procedures were reported last year. The investment is being carried out within the same financial framework, so the available budget and the reserve should be sufficient to complete the construction", the minister said. He added that in recent years the Hungarian Grand Prix has attracted more than 300,000 spectators to the venue, which is one of the country's biggest sporting and tourism events, and thus one of the biggest revenues for Hungarian tourism every year.

The Hungarian Grand Prix will be held during construction

"The construction will not prevent us from hosting the Formula 1 race next summer, albeit with a number of temporary solutions. However, the construction work here is exemplary and timely, and both the contractor and the Prime Minister's Office are paying attention to the deadlines" - said Gergely Gulyás.

J Zsolt Gyulay said that the construction and its financing were carried out at a very tight pace, which can be considered a milestone in the Hungarian construction industry.

"In the last 15 years we have extended our contract four times, first with Bernie Ecclestone and then with Liberty Media. There was an extension in 2016, then in 2021, then in 2026 and most recently until 2032. In the course of these negotiations, we have saved roughly 101 billion forints, most of which will now hopefully be built in during this renewal", said the CEO.

All tickets are sold out

<Zsolt Gyulay said that the main entrance, the operations centre and the new office building are about to be handed over and will be active for next summer's race. He explained that the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix will be the most risky, as the event will have to be staged during the construction work, which will be suspended.

"By then, the paddock building will be ready for construction. The main stand will hopefully be finished with a roof at the finish line, the biggest risk will be that the race control centre and press centre will be available with a temporary solution", he said.

Zsolt Gyulay said that all tickets for the fixed stands have been sold, and now they have started selling tickets for the temporary stands. He added that he is confident that next summer's race weekend will be a sell-out at the Hungaroring.
