The aim is to preserve the former residence of the Károlyi family.

Renovation work has been underway on several fronts since the end of last year at the Károlyi Castle in Bieslawrcsurgo, carried out by IM PRODUCT Kft., according to public procurement data. Originally built in the neoclassical style and later given Baroque-Eclectic features, the 239-year-old castle deteriorated completely after nationalisation and was reborn as part of the National Castle Programme, and conservation work is currently underway.

How the spectacular building preserves its values

The maintenance of the two side walls of the courtyard was completed at the end of last year. The renovation of the façade included:

  • plaster repairs to the porch ceiling, the profiled architrave and the main parapet,
  • renovation of the plaster on the façade,
  • complete reconstruction of the tin attic duct with red copper sheeting,
  • and repairing the facade paintwork with silicate paint on the repaired plaster surfaces.

The mechanical maintenance of the existing cooking kitchen is also part of the project. Electrical and ventilation equipment will be upgraded.

Cleaning of the lace elements using a powder-coating technique

The metal structure and the technical condition of the lacework of the listed building required structural and restoration repairs and additions.

The complete replacement of the cast iron supports of the terrace was possible by partial demolition. Temporary support structures were constructed as planned to carry out the associated copper tiling and façade repair works.

"We finished the rusted white finish, but due to the contractor's delay, we had to postpone the completion of the structural repairs by two months, until the end of February"

– said feol.hu staff, representing the Károlyi József Foundation, which commissioned the conservation work at a net cost of approximately 48 million forints. He added that construction is scheduled to be completed by March, and visitors to the castle will be able to see the results of the renovation.

"From noon to dawn"

The Karolyi Castle is now a hotel, has a history exhibition and is often used as a venue for cultural events. It is interesting to note that in the 1960s the monument was used as the location for the film drama "From Dusk till Dawn".
