One of the biggest developments in Miskolc's city centre has begun

We have reported on several occasions reported that the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) will be renovated as the new training centre of the Avas hostel (also known as Korona Hostel) in Miskolc. The MCC is the most significant talent development institution in the Carpathian Basin, operating free public talent development programmes from upper primary school to adulthood.

The building located at 1 Széchenyi István u. in the county seat of Borsod will partially regain its old functions after the comprehensive renovation, and will also become the Miskolc centre for talent management and education of MCC. This iconic building in the city centre is in a very dilapidated state and is waiting for a complete renovation to restore its former glory.

The implementation is being carried out by a consortium led by Épkar Zrt. consortium, whose other members are Magyar Építő Zrt., Fertődi Építő és Szolgáltató Zrt., ABUD Engineering Office Kft., and LINERA Mérnöki Iroda Kft.

The contract for the HUF 18.97 billion project was signed on 17 July, and work has since begun – as reported on the Épkar Zrt. Facebook page reported.

Historic renovation and contemporary extension in one project

According to information from Építészfórum, the investment, which required amendments to the town planning scheme and building regulations, is being implemented based on the plans of Mihály Kádár and TSPC Kft., with Melinda Márton, the town planning designer, and Aczél Városépítész Kft.

The project will give priority to the preservation of historical monuments and archaeological aspects, as the development will take place in a protected historic urban core, in a priority archaeological area.

Complex functions, complex design

The future complex will include student accommodation, education and event rooms, a restaurant, offices and a conference room. The net useful floor area is approximately 12,000 square metres and the main building elements to be affected are as follows:

• Building "A": existing listed building - 2470 m²
• Building "B1-B2": existing listed building - 1564 m²
• Building "C": new construction - 2270 m²
• Building "D": existing listed building - 1905 m²
• Building "G": new construction - 3759 m²

Main tasks of the implementation

The works will involve a significant amount of excavation, particularly given the archaeological importance of the site. The foundation and support works will include the retrofitting of foundations and diaphragm walls using Jet Grouting technology.

As part of the construction work, the brick facade cladding will be designed, with individual detailing. Specialist works will include roofing, tin roofing, large façade and interior glazing, and the renovation of listed event and conference spaces, with particular emphasis on room acoustics.

In terms of heritage conservation, there will be an emphasis on various restoration works, including painting, metal, stone and wood conservation. Interior design will be of outstanding quality.

The building services works will include a grey water recycling system and an automatic sprinkler system. The electrical systems will include the installation of a high and low voltage network and a new district heating plant. In the field of automation, lifts will also be installed.

The project also includes the construction of the kitchen technology systems, the utility works, including the relocation of the gas pressure control station, as well as landscaping and road works.
