A new, modern service area is being built on the M4 motorway near Monor

At kilometre marker 38+625 on the M4 motorway, near Monor, in the vicinity of Strázsa Hill, two rest areas are being built on both sides, as part of the development of MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt..

The two rest areas, situated on opposite sides of the road, will serve motorists travelling in both the Budapest and Szolnok directions. The aim of the project is to provide a civilised, safe and green environment where drivers can stop, rest and refresh themselves. The developed car park can be used separately by passenger and freight traffic, with separate internal road networks and parking areas.

Double-sided, symmetrical layout

The project comprises one rest area on each side, each of a similar design.
The size of each rest area on each side:

• 4 hectares, that is to say
• approximately 40,000 m².

The internal road network and bypass roads are designed to ensure safe traffic flow, with separate lanes for passenger cars and heavy goods vehicles.

Extensive green spaces, new play and fitness areas

Part of the area will remain as green space; the two rest areas together:

• 37,000 m² of grass is being laid,
• 230 new trees are being planted,
• around 13,000 container-grown shrubs will be planted.

The plans include

• rest and walking areas,
• playground,
• outdoor fitness equipment,
• drinking fountains,
• construction of paved pedestrian areas.

The rest areas will provide travellers with a comfortable, well-maintained environment, even during longer stops.

Parking for cars, buses and lorries

The following capacity will be developed per site:

• 30 car parking spaces, of which 3 number of accessible,
• a further 4 car parking spaces will be reserved for future electric charging points,
• 30 lorry parking spaces,
• and 5 bus parking spaces, near the toilet block.

The project also includes the installation of the car park occupancy system in the area designated for lorries, which will help drivers find available spaces.

It is important to note that the rest area is being designed in such a way that a charging station may also be installed on the site in the future.

Construction is about to begin

In 2025, preparatory work was carried out on the site (tree felling and ordnance clearance, as well as tasks relating to utilities and permits), all of which was intended to ensure that construction could commence safely at a later date.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, with the first phase running until June 2026, and will primarily

• the earthworks,
• the construction of the embankment,
• soil compaction,
• slope formation
• and involves the start of construction of the track structure layers.

At the same time, work will begin on the roll-out of utility networks:

• electricity supply and outdoor lighting,
• water supply,
• as well as drainage.

By mid-2026, the project will have reached a stage of completion that will allow work to continue on the superstructure and other functional elements.
