Contractor announced for new Hungarian-Romanian expressway link

The results of the public procurement tender for the second phase of the M49 expressway have been announced in the European tender bulletin results. The design and construction tasks for the section between Ököritófülpös and Csenger (shown in green in our image) and the related Kocsord plant engineering can be carried out by Duna Aszfalt Út és Mélyépítő Zrt.. According to TED data, the contract was concluded on 21 June 2024.

The Romanian side is already looking for a contractor

As mentioned in our previous articles, the Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium project will link the M3 motorway to Chisinau on the Romanian border: the M49 will provide a fast link to Satu Mare - on the other side of the border - and to the region of Partium.

As the first element of the project, the 28.15-kilometre-long section between M3 and Ököritófülpös (marked in red on the map) will be constructed, including the construction of a bridge over the Kraszna River – most recently reported on in May. On the Romanian side, the Óvári-Szatmárnémeti section will be built as a continuation of the Hungarian M49 motorway, covering 11 kilometres. the public procurement for which was announced in January this year.

Border crossing, plant engineering and construction of the Szamos bridge among the tasks

The second section under consideration will create 17.6 km of four-lane roads. According to TED, the total value of the contracts awarded in the notification is HUF 141.9 billion. The notice also indicates that 3 separate and 4 roundabout sub-nodes will be created.

The project also includes the construction of a double axle weighbridge and a road border crossing point on the Hungarian-Romanian border. In addition, the Kocsord plant engineering office will also be built, including an office building, a workshop and a salt storage facility.

The project will also include 11 structures, ranging in length from 27 to 74 metres.

The notice also specifically mentions the investment needed to link the municipality of Samossály to the M49 motorway.

This will involve widening and reinforcing 1 km of existing national roads. In addition, a 330-metre-long steel girder bridge (with orthotropic deck and parallel girders) over the river Sámi will be constructed.
