Previous plans are being dusted off, and a decision may finally be made on who will design the next sections of the cycle route along the Rákos Stream

Another important step may be taken in the development of the cycle network along the Rákos Stream. Budapesti Közlekedési Központ (BKK) has launched a further public procurement procedure for the necessary design work. In the procedure entitled „Design of the cycle route along the Rákos Stream II.”, the task is to design 9.6 kilometres of cycle infrastructure, as well as to review and redesign the plans drawn up previously.

The design tender was launched exactly one year ago, in September 2025. At that time, BKK launched a conditional public procurement procedure for the design of further sections of the route along the Rákos Stream.

The project is being carried out as part of the European Union’s IKOP Plus 1.1.0-23 – Strengthening clean urban and suburban transport in Budapest and its surrounding towns programme.

It affects three sections in Budapest

The design brief focuses on three main areas.

In the 13th district, the programme includes the development of the section between Váci út and Göncöl utca, and between Béke utca and Tatai utca. In District XIV, the project concerns the section between Csömöri út and Mogyoródi út, whilst in Districts XIV, X and XVII, the development of the section between Ond vezér út and Cinkotai út is planned.

The winner’s task is not only to mark out the route of the cycle path, but also to review and supplement the plans previously drawn up as part of the „Development of a cycle route along the Rákos Stream ecotourism corridor” project. They must then also prepare the consolidated planning permission and construction drawings.

It’s not a new idea, but rather the resumption of an old, long-lost connection

Plans to develop a cycle path along the Rákos Stream have been on the agenda for more than a decade. According to the publication in Magyar Közlöny, plans were drawn up for the creation of a 22.5-kilometre continuous cycle route was planned along the stream’s section within the capital, which would create a link between the Danube and the Gödöllő Hills.

The regional significance of the development is also demonstrated by the current preparatory work. According to the environmental assessment document document of the environmental protection procedure, which began in July 2026, the cycle route along the Rákos Stream may in future connect towards Pécel, Isaszeg, Gödöllő and Szada.

The ‘Cycle Route of the Year’ award also drew attention to the next stage

Incidentally, the section along the Rákos Stream – approximately 3.2 kilometres long, between Rákoscsaba Street and Cinkotai Road – was awarded the title of Cycle Route of the Year this year (alongside the Szentpéterfölde circuit in Zala County).

In connection with the award, Aktív Magyarország also drew attention to the fact that the section now recognised is actually the middle of a longer route. The increased attention may put the construction of the full link back on the agenda, which would connect Budapest to the Gödöllő area along the Rákos Stream as part of the EuroVelo 14 network.
