This step has improved water safety in Solymár

A new HUF 800 million water pipeline to help supply water to local residents has been built in Solymar, announced Tamás Menczer, Member of Parliament for the region, on 25 August 2023 in the Pest County settlement.

Tamás Menczer, Minister of State for Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, recalled at a press conference that last summer, due to long dry spells, thousands of people were left without water in Solymar during certain periods. The problem was not caused by a technical fault, the system was working, but by increased consumption, he stressed.

He also recalled that the situation had been remedied by three measures: the population was asked to use water only for the bare necessities; the Hungarian Defence Forces soldiers "delivered" water to the tanks on "axles"; and the water company carried out water management. The three measures were able to remedy the problem last year, he pointed out, adding that the medium-term solution was to build a new pipeline to bring more water to Solymár if the situation required it.

The new pipeline can bring to Solymár the amount of water that the soldiers transported to the tanks by car last year, he said. He added: "A big step has been taken towards water security in Solymár, but even after the pipeline is built, it cannot be ruled out that the population will not be asked to limit consumption in the event of a major drought. "The pipeline has triggered one measure, the military water haulage, but in the event of a major drought, it may be that we will continue to ask for the cooperation of residents in the future."

He also stressed that the pipeline is a medium-term solution, a big step towards water security, but the long-term, lasting solution is the comprehensive development of agglomeration water infrastructure, a multi-billion project.
