The repair of the underpasses on the Flórián Square flyover has already started

The renovation of the Flórián Square southern flyover is progressing on schedule, according to the investor BKK Zrt..Since the closure of the bridge on 1 March, the general contractor KM Építő Kft. has been carrying out mainly demolition and scaffolding works on the closed southern flyover:

• taking advantage of the favourable spring weather, demolition and scaffolding work has started on the areas affected by the retaining wall sections, and
• completed the construction of a suspended guardrail over the road and tram tracks, which is fully enclosed so that nothing can fall on the road and tracks during the renovation.

In the meantime, specialists have started repair work on the substructure of the southern flyover:

• conservation works are carried out on the head beams of each support;
• loose, easily detached concrete parts of reinforced concrete surfaces are removed;
• the remaining concrete surfaces are repaired and reinforced with shotcrete to ensure the durability of the structure.

They are informed by a detailed health check

As BKK recalls, the milling work carried out at the start of the renovation in March revealed defects in the reinforced concrete track slab. Its condition, the depth and extent of the damage were also examined by the designers and engineers working on the renovation, who used instruments to measure any salt contamination. A detailed condition survey of the existing sub-base has been carried out to determine exactly what repairs are needed and how they might affect the construction schedule.

They also point out that the Flórián Square overpasses were last renovated in 2002-2003, and their technical condition has deteriorated significantly since their last upgrade. The works will include replacing the road surface; repairing defects in the reinforced concrete deck; renovating the full width of the insulation, eliminating the cause of the leaks above the piers; constructing a new reinforced concrete curb; and installing a new expansion structure and a new corner at each end of the bridges.
