Major maintenance work on the M7 motorway was completed ahead of the summer peak period
There will be no scheduled major maintenance work on the M7 motorway during the summer break. According to the operator MKIF Zrt., the final construction works before the summer primarily involved resurfacing and the reinstallation of two traffic counting loop detectors. A traffic-counting loop detector is a sensor system – built into the road surface – capable of determining both the number and speed of vehicles passing over it, thereby providing important information for maintenance and traffic management.
According to the plans, no further significant traffic restrictions or diversions are expected on the motorway during the summer.
As part of this year’s Major Maintenance and Road Safety Improvement Programme, a total of three traffic diversions have had to be put in place so far.
What happened at the Agárd junction?
On the carriageway heading towards Budapest, the exit and entry lanes at the Agárd junction have been temporarily closed whilst work is carried out between kilometre markers 50 and 59. These works were necessary following the results of the annual road surface condition surveys.
The closure of the slip road was in force between 4 and 17 May 2026; however, the work was not carried out on the slip road itself. The workers were operating in the adjacent H1 (outer) lane – that is, the outer, through lane – where they replaced two layers of asphalt.
Subsequently, between 18 and 29 May, the exit lane was closed. Here too, the works took place in the H1 (outer) lane immediately adjacent to it, but the works required more extensive structural refurbishment, as not only the asphalt layers but also the concrete sub-base beneath them were replaced.
It is important to note that no refurbishment work was carried out on the approach and exit ramps themselves, as these had already been modernised in 2025.
The coast is clear before the holidays!
In its latest Facebook post and video, MKIF reported that, despite the changeable weather, the resurfacing works in the Székesfehérvár area were completed four days ahead of schedule, meaning that since 12 June, the M7 has been open to traffic in both directions between the M0 and Balatonvilágos without any restrictions.
And it will stay that way throughout the holidays too – that’s the promise of the MKIF.
As has been the case over the past three years, there will be no scheduled resurfacing works on the M7 motorway between the M0 and Balatonvilágos during the school holidays, i.e. from 20 June 2026 to 31 August 2026, in either direction – neither towards Lake Balaton nor towards the capital.
The company has been doing this voluntarily for years to make the lake more easily accessible during the summer months.
It is important that operational and maintenance tasks (which, in practice, means maintenance work) are carried out continuously along the entire length of the M7 motorway, even during the summer months. However, traffic data is also taken into account when planning these tasks.
